I take a holistic approach to postural care, seating and mobility requirements. Everyone is unique in terms of their  requirements for postural support, seating and function and these are carefully considered through a comprehensive assessment process and understanding what is important.

Lying and sitting postures are inextricably linked and where there is a risk of body shape distortion, or where this is already evident, it is important to consider what a "typical" 24 hours looks like. For example, what do you/ the individual need to do each day and where, what equipment is used to support posture, mobility and function, who offers the circle of support. A physical assessment is carried out to determine range of movement, and to better understand any postural asymmetries and where support is needed.

 

 

Consideration is given to the potential risk of skin damage and how this is affected by asymmetrical postures, movement and equipment provision. Interface Pressure mapping (IPM) is used to identify asymmetries and high areas of loading and helps inform appropriate equipment provision. This is also used as a tool for people who can actively relive pressure in sitting. Nutrition and hydration can impair skin integrity and affect wound healing, therefore these are factors that will be considered during the assessment.

Goal setting is important and understanding what needs to be achieved and how is carefully considered. Often, there is a"work in progress" approach to the process of assessment, goal setting and equipment provision. This will help determine what interventions are appropriate and what support and equipment is necessary. Trials of a rang o equipment may take place and there may be a range of equipment distributors involved, depending on the complexity of the situation. Likewise, there maybe a training component to ensure any recommendations and equipment provision is understood to ensure maximum success.
